Cosmetology/Teacher Training

The following is a breakdown of the units of theoretical and practical instruction necessary for completing the course, as prescribed by Illinois statute. Please note that the actual sequence of instruction may vary. A total of 1500 hours.

Cosmetology Description

  • Hours: 150 of classroom instruction in general theory.
  • Subject areas:
  • Tools and Their Use
  • Shampoo
  • Understanding Chemicals and Use
  • Types of Hair
  • Sanitation
  • Hygiene
  • Skin Diseases and Conditions
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Electricity and Ethics
  • Hours: 500 of instruction in a combination of classroom instruction
  • Hands on experience in the following subject areas:
  • Permanent Waving
  • Hair Coloring and Bleaching
  • Hair Relaxing and Hair and Scalp Conditioning.
  • Hours: 475  Specific instruction in hair styling
  • Classroom instruction and hands on experience in the following subject areas:
  • Cutting
  • Thinning
  • Shaping
  • Trimming
  • Application of Electrical or Mechanical Equipment
  • Marcelling
  • Curling and Hair Treatments.
  • Hours: 200 instruction in the following subject areas:
  • Labor Law
  • Worker’s Compensation
  • Client Relations
  • Bookkeeping
  • Marketing and Merchandising
  • Emergancy First Aid
  • Right-To-Know Laws
  • Pertinent State and Local Laws and Rules
  • Business Math
  • Safety with Electrical Devices
  • Business Ethics.
  • Hours: 85 hours of instruction shall be provided.
  • Hours: 55 hours of practical instruction.
  • Hours: The remaining 35 hours required shall consist of coordinated classroom and practical in elective and senior review areas

Teacher Description

Post Graduate (500 Hours)

  • 150 hrs General Theory
  • 100 hrs Practical Chemical Application
  • 100 hrs Hair Styling
  • 100 hrs Shop Management plus Interpersonal Skills
  • 50 hrs Facials plus Massage plus Nail Technology

Teaching Courses (500 Hours)

  • 20 hrs Educational Psychology
  • 20 hrs Teaching Methods
  • 50 hrs Business Administration
  • 150 hrs Application of Methods
  • 260 hrs Supervised Teaching
  • Hours: 20 of instruction in a combination of classroom instruction
  • Which shall include:  But not be limited to, topics in educational objectives, student characteristics and development, the learning process, and an evaluation of learning which relates to teaching.
  • NOTE: The requirement above may be waived if the student can present documentation demonstrating that the teacher trainee has completed a course in Educational Psychology at an accredited college or university within the five years immediately preceding admission to the program.

     

  • Students already meeting the requirement will be credited with these hours at the time of enrollment.
  • Hours: 20
  • Which shall include: Topics in individual differences in learning, lesson planning and design, lesson delivery, assessment of learning performance, classroom management, student motivation, and classroom climate.
  • NOTE: The requirement above may be waived if the student can present documentation demonstrating that the teacher trainee has completed a course in Teaching Methods – Secondary Level at an accredited college or university within the five years immediately preceding admission to the program.

  • Students already meeting the requirement will be credited with these hours at the time of enrollment.
